What We've Been Up To!

Farm Tour July 30,2025

We had a fantastic day on the farm hosting a forest farming and agroforestry field tour. The day brought together beginners and experienced growers alike for hands-on learning, open discussion, and real-world examples of forest farming in practice.

With Michael Boring and Wyn Miller leading the tour, participants also had the opportunity to learn from additional knowledgeable forest farmers, creating a great environment for shared experience and peer-to-peer learning.

Topics covered included:
• An introduction to the farm—scale, operations, products, marketing, and farm history
• Overviews of agroforestry projects, including goals, intended outcomes, costs, funding, and key partnerships
• A guided field walkthrough highlighting site suitability, planning, species selection, layout, and establishment
Hands-on, in-field observation of forest-grown medicinal plants, where the group saw the active growing of goldenseal root, wild hydrangea, wild yam, blue and black cohosh, ginseng, and other native species
• Lessons learned—what worked, what didn’t, and what we would do differently next time
• Discussion of material sourcing, labor, costs, and funding options
• The future of the projects and practical advice for those just getting started
• Wrap-up discussion and Q&A time with participants

The day concluded with meaningful conversations, questions, and connections among attendees, along with time for evaluations and feedback.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to learn, share, and strengthen forest farming in our region.

Harvester and Growers Meeting:  August 20, 2022

Thanks to everyone that came out to support our 2022 Annual Harvesters and Growers meeting. We had some really good presentations about Ginseng and Goldenseal. Thank you to Morgan Brothers BBQ for the good meal. Dr. Gao spoke about her work at Middle Tennessee State University and the IGI. Her presentation was about what they do and the different groups that they work with. She also presented Ginseng harvest data and spoke about intercropping with Ginseng, Black cohosh and Goldenseal. 2022 summer projects were also shared by her. Ed Fletcher spoke about AHPA Good harvesting practices and proper plant identification. Other material that he discussed was when to harvest and the different types of growing with shade. He also did a hands on workshop demonstrating propagation of goldenseal and black cohosh. Our own Michael Boring gave a brief history about business that his dad started in the 1970’s. He also spoke about goldenseal plantings and Harvest guidelines in general with an emphasis on Tennessee State Ginseng harvest rules.

More Conservation Efforts

Virginia Tech's John Munsell paid our headquarters a visit this weekend where we talked about Roots and Herbs and all the going-ons of our industry. We also talked about Appalachian Beginning Forest Farm Coalition and how our groups can partner on conservation efforts!

Conservation Efforts

As a part of our conservation programs, we were happy to be able to donate Ginseng Rootlets to be planted inside the park at  It’s one of our continuing conservation efforts that we engage in throughout the year.
